So… what even is emetophobia?

Short answer: it’s the fear of getting sick.

Long answer: it’s a lot more than that.

Emetophobia isn’t just “ew I don’t like being sick.” It’s your brain taking a small possibility and turning it into a full situation. It’s overthinking, avoiding, planning, and sometimes spiraling over things most people wouldn’t think twice about.

And the wild part?
A lot of us know it doesn’t always make sense… but our brains don’t really care.

A few things people don’t realize about emetophobia:

  • It’s not just about being sick—it’s about the fear of losing control
  • It can affect eating, traveling, socializing, and even daily routines
  • Some people avoid certain foods, places, or situations completely
  • Anxiety itself can cause nausea… which makes the fear worse (fun cycle)
  • It often starts from one bad experience (usually as a kid)
  • A lot of people have it… they just don’t talk about it

The part people don’t see:

It’s the constant “what if” thoughts.
It’s analyzing every feeling in your body.
It’s trying to stay calm on the outside while your brain is doing the most on the inside.

It’s exhausting sometimes.

Why this space exists

For a long time, I thought I was the only one who felt like this.

Then I started seeing other people talk about it—moms, friends, partners—and it changed everything. Just knowing other people get it makes it feel a little less overwhelming.

So I made this.

Not to cure anything (because I’m still in it too), but to:

  • share real experiences
  • connect with people who understand
  • help others learn what this actually feels like
  • and create a space where no one feels alone in it

One more thing

This is a no-trigger-word zone.

When I was younger, I couldn’t say anything related to getting sick, so I called it “upchuck on a woodchuck.” It stuck—and it still works—so that’s what we call it here.

Safe, simple, and a little ridiculous.

If you’re here because you have emetophobia,
or you love someone who does—

you’re in the right place.

We get it here.
